Safe Sleep

How often do you check on sleeping children?

Every 5 minutes. However, staff sit next to sleeping children and they are never left unattended.

Do children need to bring in their own bedding?

We will provide our own bed sheets; however, all parents must provide a sleeping bag (Summer and Winter – tog appropriate) for under 2-year-olds.

How do you get children to sleep?

We follow the lullaby trust and Ofsted’s safe sleep guidance. Every child is laid to sleep following their individual routines (Time, comforter and length of time asleep). As we follow the lullaby trust for sleep guidance, all babies and children are placed to sleep on their back, known as the supine position, as this is guided as the safest way to sleep. The safest way to sleep is to keep the sleeping area clear (No cot bumpers, pillows, additional toys or teddies, blankets are in or next to the child to sleep).

Curriculum

What curriculum do you follow?

All our settings currently follow the milestones assessment toolkit produced by Kent County Council in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).  We are in the process of creating our own curriculum for 0–5-year-olds, with reference to the ’Curiosity Approach’. We hope to be able to share this with parents shortly.

What areas of learning are covered?

The EYFS curriculums divided into 7 areas of learning:
Prime Areas:
• Communication and Language
• Physical Development
• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas:
• Literacy
• Mathematics
• Understanding the World
• Expressive Arts and Design
These areas are interconnected and delivered through play-based experiences.

How is learning delivered?

Learning is delivered through a balance of:
• Child-initiated play (following children’s interests)
• Adult-led activities (planned and unplanned teaching moments)
• Routines (e.g. group time, story time)
Our settings embed a more holistic approach to development rather than formal lessons. Our new curriculum (once published) will have the ‘Curiosity Approach’ embedded throughout.

How do you assess children’s progress?

We use ongoing observational assessment aligned with EYFS guidance, including:
• Observations
• Tracking against developmental milestones
• Progress reviews
Progress is measured using the EYFS (Milestones Assessment Toolkit)

How do you involve parents in the curriculum?

We work in partnership with parents by:
• Sharing regular updates and observations through our online system
• Encouraging learning at home (i.e. going on a nature walk to collect natural resources, reading, eating together and how to be good communicators at home).
Parents are seen as children’s first educators.

Is there a focus on school readiness?

Yes, our curriculum supports school readiness, including:
• Developing communication skills
• Encouraging Independence
• Develop social interaction
• Support early literacy and numeracy skills
This ensures a smooth transition to Reception.

How is outdoor learning included?

Outdoor learning is a key part of our curriculum and supports:
• Physical development
• Risk-taking and confidence
• Exploration of the natural world
Children have daily access to outdoor environments.

Does the breakfast and after school club follow a curriculum?

No, the breakfast and after school club does not follow a ‘formal’ curriculum. Planned activities are available to the children with the focus on play. The primary focus is on care and enrichment, not formal teaching.

Key Person

What is the “key person” approach?

Each child is assigned a key person prior to starting our setting who:
• Builds a strong relationship with the child
• Monitors development
• Acts as the main contact for parents

How is the key person allocated?

Your child’s key person will be allocated prior to your child starting. The allocation of key person is based on days your child attends.

What happens if my child does not bond with the key person?

Every member of staff is dedicated to their role as a key person and will do their utmost to build a relationship with your child. Should your child not bond with their allocated key person after a period of time, we will observe your child and see who they connect with better, and a transfer of key person may be possible.

Is the key person the only person who looks after my child?

No, all nursery practitioners are responsible for all children. The key person is their to build a strong bond with your child to ensure your child feels safe and secure in the setting, they will observe, record and track your child’s progress, they will do handovers on entry to the setting and leaving the setting and will be parents first port of call.

If my child’s key person is off, who will keep me updated on my child?

If your child’s key person is not working, a member of staff who is most familiar with your child, will take over the day-to-day care routines, observations and handovers.

Can I add my child’s key person on social media?

No, unfortunately staff are not allowed to request you or accept request from parents and carers on social media. If you already know a member of staff, prior to coming to the setting this is allowed, and staff are to record this on their ‘conflict of interest forms’.

How can I contact my child’s key person?

You can contact your child’s key person through the Famly App or via the nursery mobile during working hours.

Can I contact the key person out of hours?

No unfortunately staff are only contactable during their working hours.

Ofsted

What is Ofsted and what is its role?

Ofsted inspects and regulates early years settings to ensure children receive safe, high-quality education and care.

What has changed in Ofsted inspections for 2026?

Key changes now in place include:
• A new inspection framework (from November 2025)
• Replacement of single-word grades with detailed report cards
• Introduction of a five-point grading scale
• Greater focus on inclusion and disadvantaged children
• A more collaborative inspection approach with professional dialogue

How do Ofsted grade settings?

The new five-point scale is:
1. Urgent improvement
2. Needs attention
3. Expected standard
4. Strong standard
5. Exceptional
This replaces the previous “Outstanding/Good” model.

What is a “report card”?

Instead of one overall grade, settings now receive a detailed report card showing performance across different areas, with strengths and priorities explained.

What do inspectors look out for?

Inspectors evaluate multiple areas, these include:
• Quality of education (curriculum)
• Behaviour and attitudes
• Personal development and wellbeing
• Leadership and management
• Inclusion (now a standalone focus)
The emphasis is on how well the setting supports all children, especially those with SEND or disadvantage.

Funding

What funding entitlements are available in Kent?

Children may be eligible for:
• 15 hours (universal entitlement) for all 3–4-year-olds
• 30 hours (extended entitlement) for eligible working families from 9months – 4 years
• 15 hours for eligible 2-year-olds (Early learning for 2-year-olds previously ‘Free for two’)
These equate to 570 funded hours per year (or 1140 for 30 hours)

How can I use my funding?

Depending on the funding your child is entitled to receive, they will follow the funding structure, which can be found in your prospectus or parent starter pack.

Do I have to pay any extra costs, if I am entitled to funding?

Yes. Food is an additional cost (However you can opt in or out of this). Suncream is £1 for the summer term (Alternately, you can provide your own) and any additional hours that your child uses over and above your funding limit, which is charged at the hourly rate for their age.

What happens if my child attends another nursery/Childminder?

Funding forms are completed by the parents and will be required to be completed at both settings. The total amount of funding shared over both settings must not exceed 570 for universal funding or 1140 for extended funding.

The app is accessible on desktop, tablet, and phone, providing a consistent experience for both home and nursery settings.

Absence and Sickness

How do I report my child as absent?

You must notify the nursery or out of school club of your child being absent, whether this is for illness, holiday, a medical appointment or a special occasion. You can do this via texting, phoning, emailing or recording this on the Famly app. We would require an explanation for your child’s absence and when they will be returning to nursery or out of school club.

Do I still have to pay if my child will not be attending the setting?

Yes, you are still required to pay for your child’s place.

Is my child allowed into the setting with antibiotics?

We are able to administer antibiotics to a child, as long as they have been on them for more than 24 hours at home first. The antibiotics must be labelled with your child’s full name and date of birth with a current date on them. All medication must be signed in on the Famly app and administered as directed by the instructions on the label. The child must be well in themselves and have no fever to attend nursery.

What happens if my child has a temperature?

If your child has a temperature at home, they must remain at home for 24 hours from when the temperature started. If your child has a temperature in one of our settings, we will monitor this over a 20-minute period and should this still be raised or continuing to rise, we will ask you to come and collect your child. Your child must stay at home for 24 hours, after a fever has been identified.

How do I know how long my child needs to stay off?

If your child is unwell, please speak to a member of staff regarding their absence and they will be able to guide you on this matter.

Other Nursery Information

0–2-year-olds have 1 adult to 3 children, 2–3-year-olds have 1 adult to 5 children, 3–5-year-olds have 1 adult to 8 children and at the out of school clubs they have 1 adult to 10 children.

How are staff ratios managed?

A staff rota is put out a week in advance with the correct staffing for the children attending the following week. Should there be occurrences where staff are off sick or absent, management will do their upmost to arrange staffing to cover the member of staff who is off.

Are all staff First Aid Trained?

Yes, all staff have completed the paediatric first aid course or the basic first aid online (until they can attend a practical 12-hour session). All staff renew their first aid training every 3 years and online courses are always available to all staff.
